Electronics has always been of interest to me, over the years I have dabbled in various projects involving LED`s and other components.
Wirelite - the problems
I have been involved in flying model aircraft of all sorts for about 28 years and it was at a model weekend that saw someone flying at night with a glowing outline on the model. After some investigation I found out it was called wirelite. Wirelite consists of a core wire coated with a Dielectric material and two very fine wires around it with a coloured plastic outer cover. A high voltage of 110 volts at about 4000 Hz is required to drive it. I ordered a quantity of wirelite to try out and about two years ago a friend brought a Scania Griffin round for me to try and light with wirelite.
I made a number of these boards with wirelite and although they looked well they had a number of faults:
- They were not bright enough for daylight
- The driver to make it work was only available in 12 volts which meant a voltage dropper from 24V to 12V was required to run it if used in a lorry - this added more expence to the product.
- The driver gives out a very high pitched sound which lorry drivers complained about.
I therefore decided to stop using Wirelite and switched to using LEDs which achieve the same effect without the disadvantages of wirelite
Our product - the solution!
JB Logos currently produce custom-made LED signs. These are boards which are made of plastic, 3mm thick and white in colour. The front of the board has the customer's design cut in vinyl to their specification. Holes are drilled in the board at appropriate points on the design for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in various colours. The board has a back (to cover the wiring) which is 10mm narrower than the main board around all edges. All signs are supplied with an on/off switch and dimmer control and a length of cable which connects to your 12/24V supply (depending on your customisation).
